myths & tales:
This image is of a pleurant , which is the French word for a mourner, releasing a Luna moth. The moth is in the immediate foreground, and is supposed to be closer to the viewer (which is why it is significantly larger than the person: this technique is known as foreshortening). Conversely, the image can also be looked at as if the person is catching the moth, as opposed to releasing it.

I recently rescanned this image, and it now appears in its original black and white form (as opposed to the sepia-toned version I displayed here previously). Ironically, the day I uploaded the new version is exactly three years from the date I originally uploaded it. The colored version was used with permission for a newsletter at the Anthropology of Mythology Site.
